Tonight

I will be glass I will flow
imperceptivity I will be so clear
the soft crystals of self will
unlatch their closed facets will
release the infinitesimal voltages
binding voice to throat as I
step through the side door outside
light circumscribing where I stand
not where I walk to where I
snap off a branch of deadwood
beneath the departure of geese
then confessing there is something:
naphtha and fire -- what can I believe
about water and air -- that booming
through the sound barrier -- or
Werther's sorrows

When the vertical blinds

of my living room are not companionable
shadows of stripped trees broken lattice
through overhead island of sky     sun
are now separable admonitions of
early moon and road worn through
yellow lines brings a blackness
explained as imprint of an evening
without backyard lights without acrid
air of chimneys without held center
where I imagine harmonies of an old
Philco where steam knocks in silver
radiators -- and noises in my sleep --
my mother crooning like the mourning
of doves -- I know that sound
